I upgraded to XFree86 4.3.0-r2 and all is well. I want to use one of the new mouse icon themes so i changed the /usr/share/cursors/xfree/default/index.theme to use gentoo-silver and restarted X.
The gdm login dialog shows the new pointer. Now when I login to GNOME2 desktop, I have the movable mouse pointer with the new theme and I have what looks like the standard X pointer shaped like a X fixed right in the middle of the desktop.
If I go back to the default mouse, the X in the middle of the desktop is gone. It doesn't seem to matter which new mouse pointer theme I pick, I get it and an X in the middle of the desktop. Very annoying.
So, how to fix this? The machine is an IBM T21 Thinkpad that uses the Savage IX video chip and the corresponding driver.

Yeah . . . it would be just like the tv show. Except somebody would be watching. |

4.3.0 seems to be very buggy. |
