I'm about to head off to a lan party with 5 other windows XP boxes but I have no clue how to get this box setup with them. They use the autosetup thing for homenetworks on windows XP. What should I do?

It depends what you're looking to do.
If it's games,or most anything else, you should be ok if you just assign your self a static ip in the same subnet as them, same dns servers, gateways, etc, or use the same dhcp server. Windows autosetup just automates the process, but you should be able to get by if you just look at how it setup the next guys networking, and just give yourself another, unused ip.
Things like windows file sharing would require samba.
That's about it i think. |

cool, how do you do this in linux tho. I had to sit through the A+ certification class so I know a lot about windows networking but am still clueless on where the files are for tux. |

To set a static ip:
assuming your connecting from the eth0 interface, choosing your ip as 192.168.1.5 and the gateway as 192.168.1.1
# ipconfig eth0 192.168.1.5 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 up
# route add default gw 192.168.1.1
and you can add dns servers in /etc/resolv.conf
Code: |
nameserver 192.168.1.1
nameserver 192.168.1.2
|
This info can also be entered in /etc/conf.d/net in a slightly different form, if you want networking to kick up at boot time.
(The gentoo handbook is a pretty good resource for setting networking up)
If the network has a dhcp server, the process is much simplier
# dhcpcd eth0
will automatically take care of all of the above for you (but make sure you have dhcp installed before you go)
Again, take a look at the gentoo handbook, its a prety thourough reference |
