Has anyone ever experienced their screen going blank suddenly and then the xscreensaver password request popping up instantly?

By "suddenly" I am guessing that you mean, while you were actively using the machine ?
I have had this when my time was way out .. and after an rdate time sync, the screensaver activated.. but as I was using the machine at the time, it asked me for a password right away .. _________________ All reality is the construct of the observer.

yes it sometimes happs as im using the machine.
EDIT:
This isn't after a time-update - i have ntp-client running once on boot thats all _________________ Main:
Kernel: 5.4.38 amd64
