It worked! It actually worked!
I downloaded the sources and patched them first with the mm patches and then with the Attansic L1 driver. I then took the config-livecd-x86 from your LiveCD and added the option NET_PCI (that the atl1 driver requires). I could then select the atl1 driver as a module. After copiling it (make && make modules), I copied the driver via an usbstick to the machine in question and insmod'ed it. DHCP kicked in and I could ping google.
Thank you very much for your help and providing links to the correct kernel sources. Now I can get back to installing Gentoo on my new MythTV box. _________________ A certified Gentoo lover!

Damn, I guess I cheered just a bit too soon. The Attansic L1 driver (version 2.0.1 for the kernel in question, 2.6.19-rc5-mm1) apparently crashes my gateway/switch (Dlink DI-624) so hard, that I have to turn it off and on again. So there's a reason why they are warning people with "HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL".
It's getting late, so I'll have to continue my adventures tomorrow.
EDIT: Ohhh and just another thing: removing my usbstick (after umounting it) crashes the usb driver with "Error: Unable to handle kernel paging request at XXXXXXXX" IIRC. _________________ A certified Gentoo lover!

The liveCD doesn't seem to work on Abit IB9, boots but cannot mount the filesystem off the P-ATA CD. The official Gentoo 2006.1 does, but cannot find S-ATA. |

OK, I'll try that. It worked in the latest Kubuntu now, so installing will not be a problem anyway.
Edit: I was using the "final" but now notice the r4 and r6 are much larger, are they later? |

The x86-r6 seem broken, atleast 7-Zip under Windows can't open the tar file (bzip2 OK).
I could send you the dmesg from KUbuntu if you want. |

I tried this now, but after the kernel has loaded, it stops with "No bootable medium found, waiting for devices". And isolinux says my BIOS is extremely buggy, although isolinux on the 2006.1 doesn't say anything. |

then I guess you'll have to wait some time until your board is supported to some extent,
you already tried the r6 release since it's the latest version available at the moment (sorry for the inconvenience of the corrupt mirror-file) ?
update:
could you please post some more information of your configuration:
which drives are connected to what ports?
e.g. DVD to JMicron (ide)
S-ATA-drives to Intel ICH8R ...
Bios-Settings: How are the drives configured: AHCI, Raid, Basic / Backwards compatibility
if you still can't get it to work please post under the subforum "Installing Gentoo" and refer to this livecd / the official Gentoo LiveCD & the messages / problems you get, the people on this forum generally are very experienced & usually are able to solve the problems ...
... I'm pretty busy & unfortunately can't help you any further ... _________________ https://github.com/kernelOfTruth/ZFS-for-SystemRescueCD/tree/ZFS-for-SysRescCD-4.9.0

I'm at work right now so I can't check my copy of the livecd, but it needs to have "IT821x Pata Support" enabled in the "Device Drivers->SATA", if it is not. That particular board does not seem to have a jmicron controller on it, which is what this livecd was designed for.
If that option is already enabled in the kernel, the old IT821x might have to be enabled in the older IDE section. _________________ Nebbie

I'd like to use your small install on a Gigabyte 965P-S3 motherboard. Everything seems to work, but it doesn't detect Eth0. It's a Marvell 88E8056.
I'm pretty much a newbie to Linux, so don't be annoyed if I don't understand any reply at first.
Thanks! |

One thing to make sure of is don't use the livecd marked "Final", use the one with the largest release number, I think the latest 32bit livecd is r6.
Also, since you stated you are a linux newbie, did you try "ifconfig -a" to see if it was detected, just not enabled? _________________ Nebbie

Hello,
first of all thanks for this exceptional piece of work, I have been a happy Gentoo user for a few years and even if I knew that support for my new motherboard would have been coming but not immediate, discovering that someone had already prepared an interim install with the newer kernel was an excellent surprise.
My system is as follows:
Asus P5B-E Motherboard
-> int. Intel P965 ICH8 SATA controller => 2 x 300GB hard drives in hardware RAID 1 (mirroring)
-> int. JMicron JMB363 controller => CD-RW drive
-> int. Attansic L1 Giga Ethernet port
I have tried the standard 2006.1 install and of course it doesn't work, as it can't mount the install CD.
With your x86-r6 install CD, it boots fine, and I get the CDROM mounted from /dev/sr0, but I still have two problems:
1) The integrated network adapter (Attansic L1) does not seem to be recognized. There are drivers here: http://www.hogchain.net/attansic/attansic.html and here: http://atl1.sourceforge.net/ but I'm not sure about how I could merge them into your kernel. Fortunately, I have in the system an additional PCI Ethernet card (this is to be a gateway) which has a plain old Realtek 8139 chip, so I can use that one instead for the installation - but, if doable, it'd be useful if you added support for that network adapter in your next release.
2) More important: I can't get the system to see the hardware RAID disk - while booting, the system always detects the two separate disks under /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. I have tried booting with dodmraid (but it doesn't work, and I only get the 'control' file in /dev/mapper), with all-generic-ide, and without any extra option, but nothing changes. I've never had hardware RAID under Linux (only software RAID) so maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I'd expect the OS to see one single 300GB drive that I can then partition and install, so how do I get there?
Thanks for any help - I'm going to sleep, will try more googling tomorrow. |

Well, as I said I can live without the Attansic card, as long as I manage to get it supported when I recompile the kernel after bootstrapping the installation from your CD. (My CPU is a Core2 Duo 1.86 GHz, anyway.)
My real problem is with getting the hardware RAID up and running, but I'm not even sure whether that depends on the kernel or on anything else!
Thanks a lot anyway, |

that livecd release (r6) should include support for the IT821x controller, but via module, so you have to append the module-name on startup to let it load, don't know it's name ...
so you have to research a bit _________________ https://github.com/kernelOfTruth/ZFS-for-SystemRescueCD/tree/ZFS-for-SysRescCD-4.9.0

I think that the kernel modules I'd need are "ahci" and "ata_piix". Unfortunately, your CD (the x86_r6 I'm using) apparently has plenty of PATA modules, but only "sata_vsc" as a SATA driver.
I'm wondering whether I could download the kernel you used (2.6.19 + patch git9, right?), compile it on my old PIII Linux box, and copy the two compiled modules into the /lib/modules directory on the tmpfs after booting with your CD. Might give it a try and see if it works. |

For using your intel raid you should probably give this a read if this is your first time with onboard raid:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Gentoo_Install_on_Bios_(Onboard)_RAID
The official gentoo disk uses the "dodmraid" option when loading the kernel to get access to the raid.
My apologies if you have tried this already _________________ Nebbie
