Hi,
I tried to use overlay and gnome-experimental to get gnome 2.16, but portage still want to merge 2.14 :

What I have done is
Code:

emerge layman
layman -a gnome-experimental

/etc/make.conf :
Code:

...
...
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse"
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon fglrx"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo/ "
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="${PORTDIR_OVERLAY} /usr/local/overlays/xgl-coffee"
source /usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf

/usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf
Code:

PORTDIR_OVERLAY="$PORTDIR_OVERLAY
/usr/portage/local/layman/gnome-experimental"

/etc/portage/package.unmask
Code:

>=gnome-base/gnome-2.16.0

And when :
Code:

hermes bommings-dev # emerge -pv gnome

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] gnome-base/gnome-2.14.2  USE="cdr dvdr -accessibility -hal" 0 kB

WTF ???

To see what ebuild versions are available, run:
Code:
equery list -p -o -e gnome

You probably haven't run layman, to copy the gnome ebuilds to your filesystem.

x11-wm/metacity-2.16.0
Code:
pkg_setup() {
    # Compositor is in unstable branch
    G2CONF="$(use_enable xinerama) --disable-compositor"
}

:cry:

Well, there is not any /usr/portage/local/layman/gnome-experimental/gnome-base/gnome.ebuild

Do we have to use metacity ????

Wow, Gnome 2.16 looks really nice based on the screenshots I've watched. Can't wait 'til it hits ~amd64 :D

You can write the single packages in package.keyword and update.
Example:
Code:

gnome-base/gnome-applets
gnome-base/gnome-desktop
gnome-base/gnome-keyring
gnome-base/gnome-menus
gnome-base/gnome-session
....
....

Or you wait for an gnome-base/gnome-2.16.0 ebuild

Sorry for my bad english.

ahhh, i'm so tempted to just hard-unmask everything, but i'm also not wanting to toast my beautifully running laptop.... ahhh, man do i love gentoo, we don't have to wait forever for ebuilds to go up.. :)
this community of users kicks some major ass...

i can't wait until 2.16 hits ~x86........ I guess i have to wait patiently.. or I can play with the box I have at work.. I can always break that desktop :P

/me waits for the 2.16 ebuilds to start rolling in!

That's what I figured.

I got Gnome 2.16 to compile for me, but there seem to be three bugs:

1. After logging in, the splashscreen does not automatically disappear.

2. Logging out takes a LONG time -- probably 1-2 minutes from the time I click the mouse to logout.

3. GDM seems to be really sluggish when it comes to the config panel.

Just wanted to post my success story.. amd64 worked great.

Haven't yet added tomboy or anything that I didn't have in 2.14 or wasn't automatically added. Had to re-emerge a couple packages (via revdep-rebuild) because they linked to updated stuff...

I started a thread specific to amd64 in the amd64 forum... but overall looks and works great.

same for me, at least for the functionnalities.

For the look 'n feel, evolution is so ugly now that I hope I have some issues with clearlooks.

In the same optic, I really don't like the new icon theme. Generic icons like arrows are ok, but specific ones feels more "toyish" / slidish to me than the old ones (e.g. "Lock Screen"). It's nice that they're trying to make them consistent across desktop environment, but I'd probably try to go back to the old theme.

Edit the nautilus-2.16.0.ebuild, line 73 is missing:
Code:
src_unpack() {
   gnome2_src_unpack
   cd ${S}/src
   # fix relative include path breaking libIDL (#129366)
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/${PN}-2.14-idl_include.patch
}

Save the file, and run:
Code:
ebuild /usr/portage/gnome-base/nautilus/nautilus-2.16.0.ebuild digest
