hi,
I have fujitsu-siemens amilo 7300 with VIA ac97 audio controller and problem with new kernels.
first I was using most recent stable kernel 2.6.16-r12 and sound was corrupted (when playing mp3 with mpg123 there is 10s of silence and then there is 0.5s of sound in neverending loop, no errors ) I tried compiling in kernel, modules , alsa-driver. then I switched to most recent ~x86 kernel 2.6.17-r2 and exactly the same efect:/ then I tried 2.6.15-r1 and sound was ok. so I tested few kernels (testing just with alsa as modules)
-most recent stable vanilla-sources - sound corrupted
-most recent unstable vanilla-sources - sound corrupted
2.6.16-r1 - sound ok
2.6.16-r3 - sound ok
2.6.16-r6 - sound ok
2.6.16-r7 - sound ok
2.6.16-r9 - sound corrupted
so there is something wrong between r7 and r9 (I dont want to test r8 I got fed up with kernel-compiling for at least 1 day)
right now I'm going to stick with r7 but I dont want that in future there is some new shiny kernel with nice features and I can't use it because of soundcard. |

Hi, I have that card in my laptop as well, and I've used a few kernels lately with no problem. Now I'm on beyond 1 with starts with 2.6.17. I compile the drivers in the kernel and use alsa only. |

I have exactly the same problem. I found no fix for it except using particular kernels. If you search on google, I remember I found plenty of people complaining about this issue. I have an older card (an ensoniq) and I'm using that with no problems.
Anyway, I check from time to time the latest kernels...
[edit] I seem to remember that opening alsamixer and lowering PCM and master volume got it a bit better. But far from perfect. sigh |

I was having the same problem until I set all of the VIA DXS mixer elements to 100 using alsamixer. |
