Hello out there,
Actually i'm trying to upgrade my stable system from kernel 2.6.15 to 2.6.17 and of course to the new nvidia-drivers.
After compilation was finished i rebooted with my new kernel, my system freezes imediately after startx. I checked the gentoo nvidia guide and my kernel config: my kernel should be configured properly.
After searching a while in this forum i found some threads. with similar probs. From there i got a advice to check agp stats with:
Code: | cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status |
Output was:
I tried to enable/disable kernel agpart to switch between NVagp and kernel agp but nvidia card is still disabled.
In bothe cases the nvidia module is loaded properly.
I own an nvidia GForce4 Go 32Mb within a toshiba laptop. So the card should be supported by this driver version.
My xorg.conf is absolutely simple, i didnt en/disable any extra nvidia options, just set the driver to nvidia
My latest working setup: kernel-2.6.15-r1 with nvidia-glx-1.07174-r5 and nvidia-kernel-1.0.7174-r3
Of course, i also could try to use the legacy drivers or just change back to old config, but i would know if there is a way to enable the card
I tried several nvidia drivers wit kernel-2.6.16xxx a month ago with same probs (freezing whole system immediately after startx) but at this time i didnt knew the cat command , so i assume the status was disbaled there also. I really dont want to check several drivers again.
Thanks for any hints how to enable the status.
Edit: Meahnwhile i tested the cat ...agp/status on my other gentoo box. Agp gets enabled, if at least xdm is started, so unfortunately in console mode the agp status isnt a indicator for any probs .
Anyway do you have some tips what else i can do to get a later driver working? I would like to test if performance under xgl is better with the latest drivers. |

Hi,
Have you tried the following? This is what I used and it worked like a charm.
Best,
