Harware:
Inspiron 8100, 900MHz P3, 256MB RAM, Soundkarte: Maestro 3
I use a 2.4.20-gentoo-r3 kernel, alsa, xmms and mpg123 in the newest stable version (today is the 1st of May 2003). I have the following problem. After startup everything is fine and sound is working properly. But after I let the machine run for some time (I think most of the time xmms is running) The audio breaks. Either mpg123 and xmms refuse to play anything, or xmms freezes or any audio by any program is played in something like double speed.
This time xmms froze first and the problems started after I killed it.
I hope this is enough information. If it is not and youd like to see some files or outputs please let me know wich. Please help me.

Have you tried it with a vanilla kernel? I have a friend who runs gentoo on his dell laptop, and has had similar problems with his alsa drivers without success as of yet, but he has an 8200, and I haven't had a chance to look at his.
But my laptop -- Gateway 600XL -- has a maestro3 and runs fine.
If the vanilla doesn't work, try looking at your logs, and see if the alsa driver is giving any strange output.
Sorry if none of this helps... |

yea, one possible solution would be vanilla, another to change your driver to OSS (....first try vanilla!!!) _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

Are you sure alsa is the problem? I have run into similar problems with xmms. First thing that solved it was to change the output plugin to OSS from alsa. I also had a problem with that in Redhat when I used to run it and it was the sound daemon dying. I would have to go in as root and kill esd. It might be that. _________________ What Larry was saying is that if you make it too easy for programmers, then poor programmers will be able to do things best left to good programmers, and will inevitably do them poorly.
