Good reason:
Distrowatch donates funds made from advertisements every week to open source projects.
They can not get this money unless they get the views that we give them.
They've even donated to Gentoo in the past. _________________ Viper-Sources Maintainer || nesl247 Projects || vipernicus.org blog |

I wouldn't take too much stock in their ranking when several of their top ten linux distros I have never heard of.
FYI - I never heard of: #3 cdlinux.pl, #6 startcom linux, #8 kateos, #9 aurox.
And I probably heard of #1 CentOS and [/code]#10 elive only one time.
That makes six of their top ten... |

I checked out website that I had seen in a magazine called http://www.distrorankings.com/
I was delightfully surprised to see that Gentoo ranks 3rd in there top 10 distros.
Hurray for Gentoo!! |

Sounds great, but seeing as I've never heard of startcom linux, and normal ubuntu is nowhere to be seen, I'd have even less faith in these numbers than I would distrowatch. _________________ "You have to invite me in" |

Yea I see where you are coming from, I didn't check into it to deeply. But I believe that distrowatch just ranks on the number of hits versus a ranking system.
And I have no idea the size of the user base either, but I just wanted to put it out there. |

It actually seems to only take random visitor's opinions as a measure. You have to select something from a box and that's it. Not a very effective means of determining a distro's usability, and it explains why startcom linux is nr. 1:
People don't know it, and thus, have never even tried it out. So They can't rank it down, because they don't know it. The guys that do know it, however, have special requirements and that's how they found out about the distro - usually their special requirements are met by what they've been looking for in the first place.
Ubuntu is not among the top ten because a lot of freshmen try Ubuntu and just dump it for not being the same as their Windows box.
At least, that's how I explain the results... _________________ Error compiling committee.c: too many arguments to function. |
