Hey all, i'm a newbie to all of this (just so you know)
Anyway, i played around with xgl/compiz it works great. Except, whenever I do an update, portage thinks it needs to downgrade Cairo 1.2.4 and glitz 0.5.6 to older versions, and does, which breaks things.. The next time I attempt an update, it upgrades them again. And so on..
How can I find out what it is that is requesting the older versions to be installed, or force it to ignore or not downgrade these packages...
Thanks,

Sounds like the same type of problem in the FAQ entry. |

you could specify the version in the package keywords.
such as:
>=x11-libs/cairo-1.2.4 ~x86
>=media-libs/glitz-0.5.6 ~x86
I think that is the right formatting _________________ My Systems - "I suggest the whole thing be coded in whitespace. Henceforth the code will be obscure and functional at the same time." |

I had the same problem recently, it was caused by the stable version of pycairo specifically requiring =x11-libs/cairo-1.0*, unmasking and installing pycairo-1.2.0 solved this for me.
