before i start X, i can normally switch between consoles with ctrl+f#
when i'm inside kde i can turn back to consles if i need, example with ctrl+f2...but how can i turn back to kde?
with my prevoius distro (rh7.2) i used to do with ctrl+f7. with gentoo, if i try to do that, everithing freezes, and keyboard seem dead. probably everithing is still working somewhere, but without keyboard, and without kde, the only thing i can do is a hard reset.
there must be somthing i don't know, and i didn't find in docs...and neither searching in forum. |

No that isn't stupid at all, ctrl+f7 is correct so it would seem your having some sort of X issue. Do you use framebuffer as well, and if so which one ? _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

I have the exact same problem (although I use fluxbox, not KDE). I found out that if you do CTRL+ALT+DEL the computer will restart safely.
The problem is really annoying. I have framebuffer enabled and use the NVidia Riva drivers (Ithink, can't remember exact kernel configuration), and I also have the NVidia drivers installed.
Is there a solution? _________________ Postcount ++ |

The NVidia docs say switching between the frambuffer and their binary driver will cause problems. Probably best to use a normal console if you need it. |

make sure ya got the right options checked in your kernel config (should already be checked by default, i think.) it's under charactor devices, check virtual terminals. there's a few other options you might want, though. can't remember right now.
anyways, if that's all correct just use CONTROL+ALT+F1 or any other func key to jump to a virtual terminal in X (or not in X.) CONTROL+ALT+F7 to get back to your X display. _________________ [resident anime junkie] -- not just a linux freak. |

If you do *not* compile framebuffer mode in then everything will work hunky dory. . _________________ Postcount ++ |
