Hello ..
i am a bit confused by the gentoo.org docs which indicate the following.
Code: | # Below is for setup using hardware RAID
title=My Gentoo Linux on RAID
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/bzImage root=/dev/ataraid/dXpY
|
what do i put in the place root=/dev/ataraid/dXpY using the MEGARAID MODULE i have setup my drives.. sda1, sda2, sda3.
install went fine, not a problem, but this part has me baffled.
i have included the AMI Megaraid driver compiled in the kernel and i do see it, before receiving the kernel panic.
what exactly goes there?
thank you.. |

I have a similar setup on one of my machines. I just set root=/dev/sda6 or whatever your root is. I was a little baffled also but just went with it. In fact I have 3 RAID systems, 1 with AMI Megaraid and the others slightly different. All are configured as above as it is hardware RAID and just treats them as disks. |

Well .. for some reason .. when i set the line to root=/dev/sda3 which is where my root is, it stats that it could not open the device and to please append a correct device ..
i have the megaRAID driver loading before it tries to load /root and i see the megaRAID driver identify sda1, sda2 and sda3 .. so it is visible by the time /root is tried to be loaded ..
any other advice? |

I am just checking what else I needed...as i said..I have megaraid too and can just use /dev/sda straight off.
I have mine as modules but you do have megaraid, sd_mod and scsi_mod compiled into the kernel? |

Well, SCSI Support. When I had problems I tended to choose plenty of options first...I am not sure which you have selected? |

OK
found the problem ...
Code: | sd_mod and scsi_mod compiled into the kernel?
|
i had scsi_mod set as a module.. soon as i set it up to compile in the kernel as you recommended .. it all works out, but now am getting an error about devfs, i thought i did that right.. anyhow ..

Okay..you need devfs. SO go to the first option in make menuconfig and select code maturity level options and select prompt for development etc etc...then you need to go to file systems and select /dev file system support.
Recompile and you're good to go. |
