I've emerged quake4-bin and paste the *.pak4 and *.that-other-extension files from my windows to my /opt/quake4/q4base but when i execute #quake4 i get this:

According to the Doom 3 FAQ (linked from the Quake 4 FAQ):

Remove the Spanish zpaks. You probably need to add zpak_english.pk4
What did you mean by "*.that-other-extension", and where is it referred to in /usr/portage/games-fps/quake4-bin/quake4-bin-1.3.2.ebuild
That ebuild probably needs its instructions clarified. It certainly needs "einfo" changed to ewarn. |

when you read "that-other-package" i want to say the zpacks but i didn't remember the name...
acording to this guide http://stolz.gsmlandia.com/node/17 (is in spanish) you can play Quake 4 in spanish... so, i don't think that could be the problem...
anyway, i will try that tonight...
besides, the error seems to be with X... |

Yep, same problem here. I have reemerged everythng I can hink of might be relevant, and checked my glxgears UT2k4 etc etc, and it all works, Also I get;
# eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] nvidia *
[2] xorg-x11
so it all should be fine. I'm trying to run Q4 at defaultdepth 24, and at 1280*1024. I get;

Renaming the ~/.quake4 folder solved this for me !
I had earlier tried a reinstall of both the game, and the nvidia driver. That still didn't work. Then reame the folder, start game, shut it down again, and copy over the savegames and keyfile....... |

It is irrelevant what you rename it to. The point is that Quake4 can't find a ~/.quake4 folder when starting(because now it is called something else), so it writes a new one. This new one works......the old didn't. Pick out the stuff from the old folder(savegames and regkey), and copy it over......and then delete the old folder. |

If quake4 finds no ~/.quake4/q4base/quake4key file, it will prompt you to key it in whan you start the game. |

I'm getting stuffed before that:
I have the DVD version.
I have emerged quake4-bin.
When I come to emerge quake4-data I get the following error.
* This package will need access to 4 cds.
* If you do not have the CDs, but have the data files
* mounted somewhere on your filesystem, just export
* the following variables so they point to the right place:
* CD_ROOT_1 CD_ROOT_2 CD_ROOT_3 CD_ROOT_4
* Or, if you have all the files in the same place, or
* you only have one cdrom, you can export CD_ROOT
* and that place will be used as the same data source
* for all the CDs.
* For example:
* export CD_ROOT_1=/mnt/cdrom
* Please insert+mount cd #1 for quake4-data now !
* Press return to scan for the cd again
* or hit CTRL+C to abort the emerge.
* If you are having trouble with the detection
* of your CD, it is possible that you do not have
* Joliet support enabled in your kernel. Please

Joliet is enabled in my kernel
I have tried:
export CD_ROOT=/media/QUAKE4
(it mounted there)
as root and user in seperate terminals and in the error one.
Nothing.

It's not the exporting, but the mounting that's important - the CD detection code (which is like spaghetti and needs a rewrite) in /usr/portage/eclass/eutils.eclass automatically searches the mount points by looking in /proc/mounts.
Look at the ebuild: /usr/portage/games-fps/quake4-data/quake4-data-1.0.2147.12.ebuild
In your situation, the CD detection code is expecting to be able to find /media/QUAKE4/Setup/Data/q4base/pak012.pk4 |

Just mount it as a normal CD or DVD.
Do not set any CD_ROOT variables, or you'll override the mounting.
As a common setup, add your CD device to /etc/fstab with e.g.:
Code: | /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto user,noatime,noauto,exec,managed 0 0 |
Then run (to set up the subdirectory):
Code: | mkdir -p /mnt/cdrom |
Then to install as normal:
Code: | mount /mnt/cdrom
emerge quake4-bin |

Hi,
CASE, case-sensitive filesystems are like hell.
This WARNINGS above remind me of my problems with either Doom or Quake Mods.
AFAIK I solved that by unpacking the pk4 files and changing the case of some paths.
The unpacking stopped the jerking when loading new areas, too (performance).
I think those are zip-files.

You're thinking of the "non-portability" warnings shown by iD's Doom3/Quake4 engine. It's not the problem here, because this is an installation problem, before the game can be run.
But I do agree that case-sensitive filesystems are user-unfriendly. |
