hey i cannot seem to set su to work to switch to root.
I have tried su, su -, and su - root, and it asks for the password, but it says its invaild, but I know its right because i will logout
of my other account and login to root with the same password.
Any suggestions?

As mgisbers said the problem is probably you aren't in the wheel group, which is probably the anwser of 90% of the problems with su. If that didn't solve it you can take a look at this forum sticky:
