I've installed gentoo on a decent amount of machines thus far, but they have all been AMD with nforce/via chipsets. Now I'm trying to install gentoo on a friend's machine, but the kernel doesn't seem to be able to load the hard drive. The option passed: root=/dev/hda3 says that drive doesn't exist and causes a kernel panic. I'm assuming I'm missing a chipset or something compiled in but I know almost nothing about Intel... Heres the LSPCI output while in the x86 minimal install cd:

Did you compile the kernel by hand or did you use genkernel?

If you did it by hand, check to make sure you have the chipset selected. Shouldn't be any more complicated then on an AMD.

Thats the problem.. I don't know where it is, on the board or otherwise. Intel Corporation 82801DB (ICH4) IDE Controller i assume is what defiantly needs to be loaded, but I don't know where in menuconfig to find that kind of driver support.

device drivers -> ata support

i don't remember the exact names, but that's close. then just look down the list until you see intel choices....if you're unsure then select them all, there should only be about 2 or three from intel, max

you might just be missing the "generic/default IDE chipset support" kernel option, could you check on that?
you can find it in
Device Drivers -> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support
