|
|
I have an Asus A8N-SLI Premium mobo and would like to install gentoo, but I am worried about nForce drivers support. I do not see any options under the GiB ethernet drivers section of the kernel config to compile drivers for the nForce Network card.
Also, I am using the RAID portion of the board as well. I've heard there is driver support but I'm not sure where to look. RAID is new to me (in linux anyway)
Is there any documentation relating the installation of gentoo, the nForce chipset network drivers, and the nForce RAID drivers?

I would suggest to boot the gentoo install cd and run net-setup to see if your card can be found there.
If you get it running there you are ok.
If not ho harm done. |

Look in the 10/100 section for the Forcedeth driver (aka - nforce driver or reverse-engineered nforce driver depending on your kernel). Dunno why it's in the 10/100, but it does run at gig speeds. I have the same board in another box, and this is the driver.

Check the install dox for RAID installs - the built-in RAID on this board is also called "Fake Raid". it can be done, but it's highly recommended to do software RAID as per the install dox. I've done Software RAID on this board and it works nicely.
HTH,

What does using software raid mean?
Would I configure the drives to be all separate and let software control the features? Seems a little silly to me.
Also, does this mean that the data I have on one of the raided sets will be lost? |

Software RAID means using the kernel to control the RAID array. The "RAID" controllers that are on boards like yours and mine are not true RAID controllers - the functions they provide are mainly for 'doze users. Again, you can use them via DMRAID (I think), but its not recommended. Take a look here as well:

Check that link I put up there - that should help with your questions.
Cheers,

So I decided to try the 2006.0 LiveCD and lo and behold, /dev/mappings shows my devices. However, the nForce network drivers aren't loaded so I had to switch to the marvell card. |

So now that I have done all of this... how do I know which hard drive is hd(0) or hd(1) etc. I have actually 4 harddisks:
2 mirrored drives that I use for storage, and 2 striped drives that I use for the main os.
Is there a command I can run that will allow me to see which drive is 0,1,etc for grub? |

I have created another topic (located HERE regarding my woes with the nForce4 raid and getting it setup. This topic doesn't suggest raid issues and since my initial question was answered, the topic is done.
Thanks for your help thus far.
Please check the above link for information regarding my raid setup and the issues with that.
