|
|
I've tried in vain to setup a pop3 server using mr postman , hotwayd , freepops and even thunderbirds own extensions (which works fine in windows).
I am wondering if i have my netsettings wrong somewhere which is preventing me from accessing the mail. Most of the documentation for the mail suggests that i need to use "localhost" as my server. I have changed my computer's hostname to HEAVEN. Does this mean i have to use this instead of localhost whereever this is mentioned? I've tried "heaven" "localhost" and even "MSHOME" when i get "authentication failed. see ya" from thunderbird when trying to check the mail. To give you an idea of my network setup, heres the output of my smbclient command:
heaven mark # smbclient -L heaven -U%
Domain=[MSHOME] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.22]
Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------
Documents Disk shared
Fatty Disk shared
IPC$ IPC IPC Service (Linux)
ADMIN$ IPC IPC Service (Linux)
Domain=[MSHOME] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.22]

MARIACOMPUTER cute
Workgroup Master
--------- -------
MSHOME HEAVEN
My host file i setup when i instaleld gentoo are as follows:
# /etc/conf.d/hostname
# Set to the hostname of this machine
HOSTNAME="heaven"
this is my hosts file:
# /etc/hosts: This file describes a number of hostname-to-address
# mappings for the TCP/IP subsystem. It is mostly
# used at boot time, when no name servers are running.
# On small systems, this file can be used instead of a
# "named" name server. Just add the names, addresses
# and any aliases to this file...
# $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-src/rc-scripts/etc/hosts,v 1.8 2003/08/04 20:12:25 azarah Exp $
#
127.0.0.1 heaven.MSHOME heaven localhost
I've used MSHOME to help me see the windows network on my sisters computer
If someone has a proven way of accessing their hotmail and gmail i would also like to hear how they did it.

Gmail supports normal POP3 with SSL. Just create an account in Thunderbird with the pop server pop.gmail.com and set it to use SSL.
Or do you simply want to recieve the e-mail to a local mail server? If so, just use fetchmail and dovecot. It's quite easy to set up. _________________ Gentoo Hardened Linux 2.6.21 + svorak (Swedish dvorak) |

Thanks. Forsome reason, after a restart, tunderbird spluttered into life and is now reading all the emails relayed to it by Mr postman.
WIll try your suggestion too Sachankara. |
