PostPosted: Mon Sep 18, 2006 12:16 pm    Post subject: nvidia driver - locks/freeze & black screen [Solved] Reply with quote

I have a problem with current/masked from nvidia-drivers, for last week.
Some weeks ago i was able 'finally' to start using nvidia drivers. But after upgrade of current GCC version, i returned to use the nv driver. The laptop completly locks after 1 second when starting xdm/X.

No i didn't do all emerge -eav world advised with GCC upgrade guide(maybe this is the problem, just system). But I won't re-emerge 770 sources unless they give errors. I would prefer to install a brand new gentoo, but it would burn my time. The system works well with the nv driver, but no acceleration.

Yes i remembered to do "eselect opengl set nvidia"

I've a toshiba satellite 2450-201 laptop.
I currently use 2.6.17-r8 kernel gentoo-sources. nvidia driver 1.0.8762 and kernel were compiled with gcc 4.1.1

from lspci there is my videocard:
Code:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 420 Go] (rev a3)

Sometimes there is no log at all, but when it is:
Code:

X Window System Version 7.0.0
Release Date: 21 December 2005
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.0

maybe the package is ~x86 masked for a reason, ie it's still in development ; ). try getting a fresh driver this week.

Good! just a thought. FYI i am using the unstable ones and it's working just fine for me anyway ; ) , but just thought i'd make sure.

first of all, which X server version are you running? Second of all, could you post your Xorg.conf file? Maybe the corepointer thing is the problem, doesn't seem intuitive but I've had my share of x configuration problems that were resloved counterintuitively. ; )

and while you're at it, why not read through the nvidia guide again and make sure all that must be done, has been done. Are you using the nvidia-glx package, or the new nvidia-drivers package? The newer one worked flawlessly for me on a computer I just set up over the past few weeks.

Post that xorg.conf if you would please, I would very much like to peruse it.

I only have installed nvidia-drivers, and nothing more from *nvidia*. And after reviewing the nvidia guide i'm starting to feel that i'm able to track differences. I saw kernel options and everything is ok.
Corepointer has no change with the nv driver configuration.

Here is my current nvidia config file, the smallest since I install X Window System Version 7.0.0

I had a similar problem with my nvidia driver when updating to the latest version.

I found that using the ModeValidation option fixed the issue, look it up in Nvidia's documentation.
http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-8774/README/appendix-d.html

For me:

Code:
Option "ModeValidation" "NoHorizSyncCheck, NoVertRefreshCheck"

Did the trick.

you also might try taking some of the eye-candy options out of your device settings for now, and reenabling them one-by-one to see if any of them make the difference.

Other than those unusual options, everything looks fine to me! try the preceeding option, I say.

:(

I tried the option on the "device" section and there was no change, altough i was not aware of this page, and can be handy for future. But for now i continue with the same problem, even after disabling "eye-candy" features.

Unfortunaly I was not able to use the nvidia-drivers ebuild. So I tried the nvidia-legacy-drivers and it worked. Still I had to solve some incorrect links of libglx.so.

Already corrected:
Code:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 43 2006-09-25 23:48 /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so -> /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/extensions/libglx.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 43 2006-09-01 17:04 /usr/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so -> /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/extensions/libglx.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 377768 2006-09-25 23:38 /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/extensions/libglx.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 653348 2006-09-25 23:48 /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/extensions/libglx.so

Altougth my video card are in the supported cards list, the problem continues since I migrated to GCC 4.1

After seeing this page:

I'm now using latest drivers.
