I am trying to set my ip address the way the install handbook says I should but im a little confused:
config_eth0=( "192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 brd 192.168.0.255" )
routes_eth0=( "default gw 192.168.0.1" )
I know what everything here means but I dont know what the brd is? Could someone clarify that for me? |

"brd" is short for "broadcast" â a packet sent to this address will be received by all the NICs on that subnet. The subnet here is 192.168.0.0/24 which means all the NICs have addresses in which the 192.168.0. is constant and the last number can vary from 1 to 254 (sometimes 254 is special like 255). _________________ The avatar is jorma, a "duck" from "Elephants Dream": the film and all the production materials have been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License, see orange.blender.org for details. |

Do you use a router at home? If so, you could set config_eth0=( "dhcp" ) and comment out routes_eth0 (this means to put a "#" in front of it, as the first character in the row). Otherwise, just leave it as it is right now. It should work.
To find out what your address is, use "ifconfig eth0".
For further reading, check out "man ifconfig" and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address. |
