I have a laptop that I'm building to take on the road with me. It's a 700MHz PIII w/ 128MB of RAM. I need basic desktop applications including a word processor, something to access Excel spreadsheets, and a browser. I'm a network engineer, so I'll also have a bunch of CLI crap as usual, but that's unrelated, my focus for now is building the productivity side of things.
What office suite is low memory and functions well with m$ formats? What's a good lightweight browser? What's a good lightweight mail client?

Not sure about any office suite capable of accessing M$ files that's not OpenOffice.org... and a good lightweight mail client (for IMAP) would be pine |

I like abiword and gnumeric for text and spreadsheet documents, respectively. Both very lightweight and fast to load. Abiword works well w/ .doc format if you're just doing basic text documents. I've had issues though w/ fancy formatting like w/ resumes, which require openoffice. If openoffice compiled w/o java support, is significantly quicker and haven't experienced any complications working with documents. Gnumeric has worked great w/ Excel (.xls) spreadsheets. I have an identical system, only mine is 600 MHz instead of 700. The only browser I've used is firefox, and is quick enough for me. _________________ "The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits." Albert Einstein |

Another vote for abiword and gnumeric. As for the browser, I think opera is a bit lighter than firefox.
You also might want to consider using openbox or something similar if you're not already. The window manager can make a big difference. |

A fast, little, GTK-based email client is Sylpheed. |

A browser that always worked for me is elinks with graphical support. Its not for everone, but I just like to hit forms and read comics. _________________ Compaq Evo n610c P4M 2.0Ghz 768Mb RAM Linux-2.6.20 Gentoo |

How about just using a version of MS Office with either Wine or Crossover Office? It seems to do well with Office 2003 for me.
But then again, I also have 3Ghz and 1GB memory.... |
