|
|
Hi all,
Everytime I want to burn a dvd with my dvd writer, I need to change the permissions of my DVD writer device node.
I have the following IDE device nodes in my dev directory:
dcr@zinc /dev $ ls -l hd*
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 0 Sep 16 07:11 hda
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 1 Sep 16 07:11 hda1
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 2 Sep 16 07:11 hda2
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 3 Sep 16 07:11 hda3
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 5 Sep 16 07:11 hda5
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 64 Sep 16 07:11 hdb
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 65 Sep 16 07:11 hdb1
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 66 Sep 16 07:11 hdb2
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 67 Sep 16 07:11 hdb3
brw-rw---- 1 root root 22, 0 Sep 16 07:11 hdc
brw-rw---- 1 root root 22, 64 Sep 16 07:11 hdd
I can change the permissions of hdd (my burner) to allow everyone to read and write to it, and this works, but these settings are lost upon a reboot.
I'm using udev, but I'm not entirely sure how to use it properly. Is there anyway to tell udev to give a device node a particular group name, like cdrw, every time it's created? I'm actually in this group, so I guess this would do the trick.
Thanks for any tips.
Desmond

The short answer is yes!
Check out this link: http://reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html
It explains everything in a pretty easy to understand manner.
Enjoy!

You know, coincidently, I had done a complete update about a week before I posted this problem. It turns out that if I reboot now, my DVD-ROM drive and my DVD-RW devices both get set to the cdrom group, which is enough to solve the issue since I am in the cdrom group.
But I also tried writing a rule to set the DVD-RW device to group cdrw, according to the link you posted, and it seemed to work okay. Thanks!
I'll mark this as solved.
