I'm attempting to get DRI working on my machine (P4 2.4Ghz on an Intel 845PE Chipset Motherboard, 1 GB Ram, Radeon 9000 Pro Video Card) in XFree86. I am using the default kernel in Gentoo 1.4r4 - 2.4.20-r2 as of this posting.

I've got AGPGart built as a module on the 2.4.20-r2 kernel, with the Intel 845 subproject (if that is what it is called) chosen as an option when using menuconfig to configure the kernel. I also have DRI enabled, with the Radeon module configured as well (though I do understand this module would be overwritten/superseded if I emerged xfree-drm, of course). Also, I have enabled the options in the kernel to use all my memory (highmem and a larger address space, if I recall correctly).

When modprobing agpgart on my machine, my whole system freezes dead. I don't get any logs that I can find, as it seems to kill the machine pretty effectively. I've also tried to configure the kernel with agpgart compiled in (no module), and it freezes the machine upon load - again, no error messages, just a straight freeze.

I've tried this also with the 2.4.19-r10, 2.4.20-r1, 2.4.20-r3, and a few other testing kernels (some ac-kernels, though no others). The freeze still happens.

I've tried to search the forums, but it would appear no-one is having the same problem.

I should point out that I have tried some of the development kernels (2.5.68), and loading agpgart does not give me any problems. However, xfree-drm doesn't seem to work with the latest development kernels, so this doesn't help me that much.

I would be most appreciative if anyone could provide any help or pointers in the right direction.

Cheers.

Emerge vanilla-sources-2.4.20, then go to www.kernel.org and get the latest STABLE PREPATCH.

Then....

 cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.20
 bzcat /path/to/prepatch.bz2 | patch -p1

And recompile as usual... It managed to fix all my USB instablities :-)
