In Control Center > Storage Media > Advanced there is the first check box greyed out with the message on the right side "(No support for HAL on this system)". On my Gentoo system (built up from zero), I have compiled the whole system with 100% HAL support enabled (hal-0.5.7.1, dbus-0.62, ivman-0.6.12, pmount-0.9.13, ...).

Ivman works correctly and mounts the inserted device (USB, CD, DVD) in /media/<device name> with the logged user as owner. But there is nothing similar in system:/media and no "autorun/autoplay" window pops up. It is obvious that this feature is disabled on my KDE 3.5.4 system. How can I enable it?

Thanx for any help!

I have a similar problem, except I don't use HAL. The HAL dependency was optional in the media:/ kioslave up to KDE 3.5.3, in which (un)mounting and accessing devices through it work flawlessly.

The HAL dependency is still optional when it comes to building KDE 3.5.4 but something incorrect causes it to not work. Additionally, I've heard that even with HAL this error message still incorrectly pops up.

To answer your question, there is a serious bug in KDE 3.5.4 which means we may not be able to use the media:/ kioslave at all.

just activate the hal deamon:

Code:
rc-update add hald default

This fixed it for me.
