I just bought an AMD64 computer and can't seem to boot Gentoo on it.

I downloaded the amd64 installCD as well as the liveCD, both of which can't boot.

Normally, it just displays a black screen waiting to reboot, but when i booted with gentoo-nofb, it stopped at lines which show
Code:
io scheduler cfg registered
.

There are other lines before that which have the same format, but with the cfg replaced with other "io scheduler ____ registered".

What should I do?

iammzz,

at first you should tell me what you want to do. Install gentoo? Then you can install it e.g. from Knoppix. Gentoo Live CD has sometimes trouble with different CD-ROM devices.

I am under KNOPPIX right now, but I can't install Gentoo because I can't chroot into the new environment.

This may or may not be because I have a 32-bit KNOPPIX.

What is the error message when you want to chroot?

I don't remember exactly, but it was something like "Cannot exec /bin/bash" or something.

hm, but that would be of great importance.
Code:
chroot /mnt/gentoo/ /bin/bash
is the command, BUT: you have to ensure, that /mnt/gentoo/bin/bash exists.
In general you should keep the machine alive, restarting everytime just to read a single message is a nasty job, isn't it?

I'm pretty sure it exists.

Yes, you need to boot from a CD with a 64bit kernel in order to install 64bit Gentoo (but it does not need to be a Gentoo CD).

Can someone help me find a 64-bit cd then?

For some odd reason, the Gentoo cds won't boot (I've tried 3!), and the KNOPPIX 64-bit version (unofficial) doesn't seem to have 64-bit chroot (is that important, or just the kernel?).

You could try the 2006.1 minimal install CD from the downloads page. I had no trouble booting into my AMD64 Toledo 4400+ with it.

If that doesn't work you can try the search feature at http://www.distrowatch.com which will let you look for 64 bit specific distros. Look for x86_64.

Also, what are some specifics on your machine? When I first fired up my ASUS A8N-SLI (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Asus_A8N-SLI) I had to update the motherboard's firmware so it could talk to my SATA HDD.

Let us know how it's coming along.

I installed Gentoo through a 64-bit KANOTIX cd, which worked flawlessly; however, the actualy Gentoo install now returns the exact same error!

Hi! What motherboard do you have? I had also bought a few weeks ago an AMD64 computer with an ASUS M2NPV-VM motherbord and just won't boot with Gentoo 2006.1 AMD64 Minimal Install CD. After searching in Google, I found out that my mother does not boot with a 2.6.17 linux kernel. The solution? I downloaded 2006.0 that come with 2.6.15 kernel and install gentoo from there. Then I upgrade all my system, except for the kernel and everything works flawlessly now. 8)

Hope it helps. Bye.

I have the same motherboard as you lucinolev, there's a solution to run the latest kernels :
try to boot with the noapic option enabled.
