The problem:
----------------

livecd ~ # mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/gentoo/
mount: /dev/sda3: can't read superblock

dmesg |tail
attempt to access beyond end of device
sda3: rw=0, want=4392382720, limit=4391601562
I/O error in filesystem ("sda3") meta-data dev sda3 block 0x105ce70ff ("xfs_read_buf") error 5 buf count 512
XFS: size check 2 failed

Other info:
-------------

When I boot the livecd, cat /proc/partitions only shows one partition. This was the same before anything bad happened. I would have to re-run parted to make the kernel see the partitions. It's too big to use fdisk.

parted /dev/sda
mklabel gpt
mkpart primary 0 32
mkpart primary 32 1000
mkpart primary 1000 2249500

xfs_repair and xfs_check don't say there's anything wrong...

if you use kernel 2.6.17, look at this:
