Hello fellow gentooists!
I'm planning on buying a new PC, and I'm wondering if anyone can spot any hardware here that isn't supported too well by linux.
I am currently running gentoo on a 32bit P4 box now, with a nVidia GeForce3 gfx-card and it has always worked without much of a hassle.
So I'm very much interested in your experience with especially amd64 and radeon gfx-cards.
Are ati's drivers as good as nvidia's nowadays?
Have 64bit enviroments caused people frustration, insomnia, etc?
Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3800+, Socket AM2
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1300, 256M PCIe
ASUS M2V, VIA K8T890
250 GB Samsung Spinpoint SATA II
CoolerMaster Centurion5, 380W
1GB (2x512 MB) PC-5300, DDR2, Original (DDR-667)
NEC ND-5170, 18x dvd-writer
Thanks in advance

Hi,
IMHO AMD64 ist a good choice but I would recommend nvidia cards because many people are complaining the quality of the ATI linux drivers. Therefore is got a nvidia card and I have no concers so far.

Everything looks good. I have been unimpressed with the ATI drivers for my Radeon, while my three nVidia based systems all run excellent with their new beta 9XXX drivers. The AM2 is fairly new but is well supported. I'd also search to see if the motherboard's sensors are well-documented. I built a new box, and that was the only thing that killed me was that lm_sensors couldn't work with my board. But the ASUS boards are always really nice, I have had excellent results with the few I have put Gentoo onto. _________________ -Shuttle SN25P, Opteron 185, 74Gb WD Raptor, 2x 300Gb Barracuda 7200.9, 2x 1Gb Corsair dual channel, BFG GeForce 7800GT

Ok, thanks for your response.
I'll propably try and find myself an nvidia card instead then.
And i'll try and get some more info on the motherboard.
Thanks for that tip jballou, hadn't crossed my mind. |
