As title, is it possible to install a version of gentoo on an IBM 70 Mhz / 40 mb ram / 512 MB HD? I have to use it for the university to program in C and Java (very simple programs btw). Let me know =) |

Y3kRulez,
unfortunately the hard drive is too small. If there is a chance, not with stage 3 archive with which you need at least 1gb. CPU and Memory should not be the problem as long as you are not mad enough to merge an X-Server . _________________ Everything works, you just have to do it correctly. |

I hate to say it but for this job I'd use a different flavor and I hope I'm not breaking any rules here. And if I am I'm onlt trying to help so plese don't hit me.
I had luck on an old 75Mz/48mb/2gig HD laptop with DSL and Vector. Liked DSL better.
Also you can get an older java sdk that will work, well works on mine, here. |

z1p101,
yes, but you had at least 2048MB, about four times as much as 512MB. This is a strong difference. I fear you have no chance with 512MB to get a stable system. That makes me kind of blue on the one hand, but on the other hand we have usually really a very scalable and powerful OS here.
Try to install WinXP on a 512MB HD, *lol*. _________________ Everything works, you just have to do it correctly. |

512MB is enough for usable system if the distribution (and packages) is chosen carefully (or modified) but may not suiffice for development.
Maybe this distribution will work

Half a gig is 'plenty' depending on what you're after. Gentoo is a no-no though for this. DSL is ok, minix will leave you most of that half a gig free. We're mostly talking old versions of distros or distro's made primarily for embedded though.
Take a look at this page;
