Greets all,
I am getting a black screen on startx followed shortly by a hard lock. At least the keyboard stops responding to any input. I upgraded too many things simultaneously to know which is the culprit, but I am running gentoo-sources-2.6.18 with nvidia-legacy-drivers and the new xorg-server-1.1.1-r1
Before I was running some version of X11 7.0x and one of the older nvidia-7xxx drivers on kernel 2.6.17
There things worked.
I browsed the gentoo forums, the nvnews.net forums, and tried lots of tricks including
1. disabling RenderAccel
2. disabling RenderAccel and glx
3. changing the HorSync and VertSync in xorg.conf
4. changing AGP to 2X from 4X
5. changeing AGP drive strength to EC in bios
6. combinations of the above
But nothing worked. Just the same black screen followed by a hard lock
Now, I don't want to have to back out of all the upgrades (and I know the xorg one would be particularly painful) Any suggestions on what else I can try to get this thing running again? |

To see if the problem is with the nvidia module, you can run X with the "nv" driver instead ('rmmod nvidia' just to make sure).
You can also look (and post if interesting) your X logs, to see what happens between starting X and the hardlock. _________________ Gnome:

yes.tried the "nv" driver and everything works fine. except for opengl accelereated apps of course

OK. Fooling around a bit more with xorg.conf, I can get X to start if I set NvAGP to "0". With the older drivers I could use NvAGP "1". Since the "0" setting completely disables AGP, this solution is suboptimal.
It seems the common answer to problems like this is buy a new graphics card. <sigh> |

There used to be some module flags in the Nvidia driver that you could use to tweak AGP. Check the docs, you might have to uncomment some stuff in the source to activate them. I used to have an old system where the mainboard had buggy AGP support and I had to force the Nvidia driver to AGP 1 speed for it to work.
You can also try the kernel's AGP driver. It seems to be always slower than Nvidia's AGP driver, but it's better than nothing.
Since your problem is really with AGP, I wouldn't bet a new card will solve it. |
