|
|
Hi. I'm working from the minimal install disk, and I can partition and everything, but I can't seem to get the networking stuff going right. It's an ethernet, static ip LAN, going through my central PC for internet access. I'm using Kubuntu on that PC, with Firestarter as my firewall/internet sharing app. I've looked at the manual, and used:
# ifconfig eth0 198.162.11.4 broadcast 198.162.11.255 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
# route add default gw 198.162.11.1
and then I put the nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf just like the manual said. It's not the cable or anything because it works on my laptop (with precisely the settings above). Some help would be appreciated, preferably in English as I'm new to Gentoo.

Why have you picked this unusual ip-address?
It will cause problems... Private IP addresses
Its the correct interface? (eth0 -> connected to hub/switch) |

You also can't have two computers using the same ip so this best NOT be precisely the same settings if your laptop is connected. _________________ Research before taking any advice from me. I'm still coming to grips with this myself. |

Point taken. What would be better?

Yes. This particular computer only has 1 NIC, and I only have 1 hub. |

Take 192.168.0.x for example... its for private purpose
Can you ping eachother?
Can you somehow (livecd/different os) check if the interface is working at all? |

No, I wasn't trying to use both with the same IP simultaniously. I was just checking that the cable worked. |

I've managed to ping my main PC and google.com, but when I started Links, all I got was errors. When I left links, I couldn't ping anything besides the main PC. Since then I haven't been able to ping anything (from that particular PC) outside the LAN. |

From the main-pc you can ping yahoo.com and your internal pc... before and after this "cut"? |

Oh thankyou! Apparently the IP address was the matter. Thanks for your help. |
