Hi. I am running the latest stable gentoo-sources kernel.

I tried both compiling the kernel's own alsa modules, and installing the alsa-driver package.
The problem is that if those modules get loaded, my kernel dumps some stuff in my log and it never works:
I have never had any problems before (with kernel 2.6.10) and the snd-intel8x0 module has always worked for me in the past...

Anybody any ideas?

This is definitely a kernel bug.

Hi Coax,

the same here. First, I had the kernel alsa modules installed, but had a problem with skype (sound was only left-eared...).
Then, I installed the latest alsa-driver (and dependencies, version 1.0.18) and then had strange (TM) behaviour of my snd_hda_intel card:
- crappy sound
- volume control was randomized (meaning pulling up the level resulted in insane volume level like 10%, muted, 90%, 50%, muted,...)
- suddenly no sound at all.

dmesg shows:

Code:
ALSA /var/tmp/portage/media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.18/work/alsa-driver-1.0.18/pci/hda/../../alsa-kernel/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:618: hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode: last cmd=0x006ba000

Now, I'm trying to get rid of the alsa-driver again and to use the kernel alsa modules again.

By the way, does anyone else have this one-ear-skype-problem? All other apps work fine, though...

EDIT: I forgot:
Code:
# uname -a
Linux 2.6.27-gentoo-r2 #6 SMP Wed Nov 12 13:32:40 CET 2008 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5600 @ 1.83GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Yesterday, I installed kernel 2.6.27-r3 and Skype _seems_ to work more stable now. I had several calls, and the mystic volume level scoller problem (see above) is gone as well.

What remains is the fact, that I have sound only on the left ear, when making calls using Skype. All other apps work fine, though. I have to adjust my audio settings on Skype like that, to get sound at all:

Sound In: HDA Intel (hw:Intel,0)
Sound Out: HDA Intel (hw:Intel,0)
Ringing: HDA Intel (plughw:Intel,0)

instead of using "Default device (default)" for all options. Does anyone else have this problem? It's really annoying....
