How to reinstall portage?

Hi,

My portage (1.9.1) is totally fried. I can't emerge nor unmerge anything. The emerge and portage.py scripts fail every time after 'Merging category/portname to /'. I was wondering if theres anyway to reset my installation of portage or any other possible way to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

just an update,

I found why the python scripts were crashing
my
/var/cache/edb/counter
and
/var/cache/edb/world
files had ^@ in them from a system crash earlier while running emerge... i had to regenerate these files using qpkg -I
