Hello.

One thing that's always boggled my mind is why the Handbook does not try to achieve an installation which replicates the state of the (minimal) install cd.

On the install cd, when I plug in my usb mouse, it works.
On the install cd, when I plug in my Flash disk, i am notified of /dev/sda

I configure my kernel with SCSI support and yet I have no scsi devices in /dev, so therefore I plug in my flashdisk and I don't know where to look to mount it.

My questions:
1) What do I need to do for gentoo to recognize a usb flash disk when it is plugged in (and notify me just like in the install cd)?

2) I installed the generic mouse deamon for the console but only my touchpad works. It is the same issue I guess, cause when I plug in my usb mouse, it doesn't work like it did on the install cd.

Note: I have hotplug and coldplug installed and am a non-genkernel user.

Can anyone help me?
Thank you

pvangarde,

The installCD has a lot of bloat so it will work with most hardware. When you do your install, you are expected to configure everything towards your box. You don't want 100+ network drivers, if you are only goint to use one, and so on.

If you have SCSI and USB storage support, when you pug your USB stick in, the node will appear in /dev and dmesg will show what its detected as too. I think hal and dbus get it to be auto mounted.
