I need someone with a fresh perspective on my setup to tell me what I am not getting correct with my kernel configuration. I cannot get the kernel to mount the root file system when I configure the kernel manually.

Attempting to boot 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 on my new core 2 duo on a Intel 975xbx motherboard.
Bios: Set Configure SATA as AHCI

SATA Drives
2x Seagate Barracuda

DVD-R that shows up as hda

Linux partitions are on the second SATA drive

I have compiled into kernel:
-IDE support for pIIXn
-SATA support for PIIXn

from my grub.conf:

Code:

kernel /kernel-2.6.17-gentoo-r8 udev root=/dev/sdc3

I believe it might be possible that the Live CD kernel gives my SATA drives the address /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc but the kernel I am building is using some different names and thus unable to find the device /dev/sdc3 that is passed to it But I am unable to verify this because the boot messages are too quick for me to tell.

If it will be helpful, I am willing post my kernel .config or any other necessary files.

I would be so grateful if someone could help me out as I have been trying to set gentoo up on my machine for over 12 hours today and I am dog tired. I can't think rationally anymore. Thanks a lot.

This morning I went in and enabled SATA support for the Silicon Image and MD support. When MD came up, I saw that it was detecting raid arrays I had previously set up on /dev/sda. That's how I got a clue that my kernel is using /dev/sda and /dev/sdb for my drives. Bam, I am up and running now. Thank for your help.
