Which sound server do you use?
Whatever I use I notice some lag. If I try to play with the number and the size of ArtsD fragments I either get cripple sound or some lag and sometimes both. Right now I use ESD, but it seems to have some lag either around 300 ms.
What do you think?

I currently use OSS...it's the only one that worked off the bat for my Inspiron 8100.

I use Arts (with ALSA). I tried other, but that's the best I've found. Yes, there's still lag.

Using Jack would eliminate lag, but there simply aren't enough programs supporting it yet.

The new dmix feature in Alsa could also help, but that's even newer, and hasn't got any support at all.

I'm afraid you'll have to settle for some lag, for the time being. With a good soundcard, a fast cpu and the correct settings I think it's easily "good enough" for everything but serious audio work.

I use arts, but barely, since with my emu10k1, there is hardware mixing and I dont really need a sound server.

ALSA, as OSS is depreceated in 2.5 kernels. Prior to that I was using OSS, but as I also have an emu10k1, I have no need for software mixing.

Btw, ALSA and OSS aren't sound servers.

esd, MAS, aRtsd, and jack are, however.

I use NAS. I use my Gentoo system along with Windows and I send all audio out to the windows box, which has a better sound card.

I tried esound, but it didn't play nice (it said it was playing, but no sound came out) with the cygwin version of esound, and it had a lot of sound related bugs.

By the way, there is no binary version of NAS for cygwin, but it will compile. All you have to do is change the location of the sound.h header in one of the files. I did that and it worked.

I also found libaudiooss, which does the same as libesddsp, but for NAS (so that OSS stuff will be redirected to the NAS server).

I made an ebuld for it, if anyone is interested:
