Hi
iam mostly likly going to answer my own question but i just wanted to know if anyone has been able to play copyprotected cds under linux, using the Cactus-200 encryption mostly. I ask because it seems the only *legal way* to play it in winblows is with the built in player but what if you dont want to use windows what option you got? i wouldnt care if i had a hifi but i dont my pc is a multimedia centre and theres quite a few albums i want but cant because of this case and i dont intend to download because the quality is cack *i actually like buying the cds:)*
so any ideas or am i stuck with unplayable cds?
Thanks very much _________________ Some people go to counselling,

Don't support manufacturers that sell you music you can't even play on the device you choose.
Use your power! Vote with your money. Don't buy crippled CDs.
Sorry about that, nothing personal
Ontopic: This method sometimes works for playing nasty CD's. Don't know about the algorithm it by-passes. |

Best place for this discussion is Hydrogen Audio Forums. Do a search on cactus protection before you ask anything, they are really communist over there |

You are right, but normally you can't choose between copyprotected and not copyprotected Cds.
I am a Fan of AfroCelts. The newest Album is Copyprotected. So what shall I do? |

Firstly all those "copy protected" CDs are, from a technical point of view, corrupt.
Sometimes a small crop of clean (i.e. uncorrupt) CDs of the same album are available somewhere in the world or from certain online retailers.
Of course finding out if any uncorrupt versions of CDs exist and where they are sold is the tricky bit. People in the UK and Europe can look here, people in Germany can look here and people in the US can look here.
Wherever you are in the world, you can look at all the links above for clues and there may be further links in those sites to further information. |

the simplest solution would be to download the tracks you legally own from a filesharing network
i don't know of other countrys but in switzerland downloading of music is not illegal (according to state televison) even if you don't own the songs
but in most other countrys it should not be a legal problem because you own the songs
but i would just return the disc with a letter to your CD reseller, the lable and your artist |
