I have some MP3s that were probably ripped a long time ago that play in Windoze fine but noatun won't play them.
Should I try other apps or does everything use a central library?

I'd try a few other apps first. If it works in Windows, the file is either damaged or was encoded in such a way that noatun can't read it (some media players are pickier than others). If you no longer have the original, and if you don't mind a slight decrease in quality, you can reencode any such mp3s with LAME. This will probably fix your problem in noatun.

Use lame to decode the file(s).
Code:
lame --decode --verbose filename.mp3
It will create a wav file of the same name and with --verbose should display if there are any problems.

make sure you have mp3 and mad in your useflags. Also, emerge --newuse world && revdep-rebuild --package-names to make sure you have the proper flags in your programs.
