Just courious who has tried it, i downloaded and installed the linux version. The downside is that there is really no chat with others using the windows client, but no matter still got IM, but i was able to network with local lan UDP with Starcraft in Wine and play my bud over the net who was in windows. Pretty cool stuff. |

Nice, how were your ping times? |

Good. I hosted both times so I had the 0 ping. My opponent pinged around 40ms so it's just like playing on a dedicated server. We only tried it 1-on-1, it's perfect for that. Not sure how it would cope with more players though.
I sometime play a whole family at UT99, there're 3 of them and they struggle with pings in the 120's when they all join a dedicated server on the net. I've suggested that next time we play they host and set up hamachi for me to connect in to. I'm pretty confident that a) they can do it because it's so easy to set up and b) it will solve their ping issues. _________________ http://www.gentoo-clan.org - http://brian.gentoo-clan.org |

It's a VPN / virtual LAN application - http://www.hamachi.cc/.
You create a network name and give it a password, then give other hamachi users those details so they can join you network. When you join a network it creates a new network interface on your pc and assigns you an ip address. I had to compile tun support in to my kernel and added a line to run tuncfg to my localstart, from then on it just worked. _________________ http://www.gentoo-clan.org - http://brian.gentoo-clan.org |

I have played starcraft with out problems using hamachi, with linux and windows clients. Although some times the hamachi config was self-reset.

Hmm. Well I setup openvpn, but it's pretty laggy for games(or it could be the connection of the users on the other end, they have a wireless broadband connection, I have cable which I know works fine). Is it possible that the issue with games was openvpn and something like this would work better? (Of course I'm going to try, I'm just curious if others have had experiences with opevpn and with hamachi and have any comments about it). |

Well this didn't work very well...
I don't have a kernel config due to being hosted on a Xen VPS - going to contact them and see what we can do.
I could probably just fudge a config file couldn't I?
I do have tun module, i did modprobe tun and it loaded. I also created the device node as per the kernel docs.
Hope I get somewhere with this, other wise i'll have to go another way.
This isn't for games either, this is just for servers and me being able to connect to them through NAT... (external contractor said "if he fucks it up its gonna break" well DUH!!! he wont give me the password...) |

if you must have opensource, openvpn is a very good solution for things like this. Sure it takes a bit of configuring, but it supports advanced features such as encryption and ssl. From what i have seen, it is just as fast for playing games and the likes.
openvpn supports TCP and UDP (which is recommended for optimal performance)
There is a GUI available for windows called OpenVPN-gui that can make the vpn easy as sending your friend the configuration files/keys (which are simple to generate) and them double clicking the config file on their desktop. It also supports security features such as giving up privelages after initialization, and even has a built in chroot jail feature to save you the trouble (its difficult to stick it in a chroot when you are running grsecurity with full chroot protection).
Hamachi may be easier, but it lacks features and the open source factor of openvpn. OpenVPN can be locked down easily If your friends are BSD zealots, it will run for them to. (although im not sure how they would play games with you ;] )
