I've been doing tests, and I've found that emerge --sync doesn't work due to the internet connection. Let me explain:
If I try to download with wget or firefox any file bigger than 300 or 400 kB the download hangs when it have downloaded 300-400 kB. I can say that in the same pc and the same internet connection (and settings), with another OS (Windows XP) this issue is NOT present. Then, I can say that I've run a Gentoo Install Live CD 2006.1, and the issue appeared again!

Conclusions: The problem scope is in the OS, not application problem, not hardware problem. Maybe kernel problem?
Code:
# uname -a
Linux hoth 2.6.17-rc6-mm2 #6 PREEMPT Sun Jun 11 18:00:06 CEST 2006 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1400MHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

The kernel that comes in the live CD is probably older.

Probably it is a driver problem.
Explain your internet connection (lan?, ADSL? cable?).
Give the output of lspci to identify ethernet adapters or similar devices.

I would try with other livecd, maybe with older (2.4) kernels.

Do you have the same problem with lan to lan connections?

LAN to LAN connections are ok. No issues.
I'll try with another kernel...
