sylpheed stopped working correctly

I have been running sylpheed as my mail client since installing linux. Today when I tried to launch it, it runs fullscreen but everything is white with no buttons or anything useful. I can't access my menu behind it either. I tried unmerging it and emerging sylpheed-claws, but it had the same problem and gave me the error message

Have you tried remerging openssl emerging sylpheed with USE="-ssl"?

The warning is from OpenSSL, it is harmless if you don't use SSL for mail access. To hunt down the real error check ~/.sylpheed/sylpheed.log and try starting sylpheed as
