|
|
I have a couple computers that I'm having trouble with. I boot fine, grub loads fine and I can see the grub menu. Then I hit enter, and the screen becomes fuzzy. I know it's printing the standard stuff because I can see some green that looks like the "Ok". But I can't read what's going on until it says "setting terminal encoding to UTF-8". Is there some way to fix this? On my other computer which is a laptop, I just see a blank screen... and then it pops up with the terminal encoding thing about halfway through booting.
I'm compiling my own kernels on both of these computers. I use the gentoo sources. Both of them have pentium processors, and the one has a built in video card. The other has an ati radeon mobility 9000. I suspect this has nothing to do with the problem, but what the heck...

Are you compiling the correct framebuffer information into your kernel. Use the vesa-tng if you have nvidia. |

Perhaps the kernel default is not set to UTF-8? Code: | File systems --->
Native Language Support --->
(utf8) Default NLS Option |

(iso8859-15) Default NLS Option
changed to utf8
Should i have vesafb or vesafb-tng for a built-in graphics card?

either will work they are pretty much the same from a user level except for the ease of configuration for the vesa-tng. |

Alright, I kind of have it working. It still goes fuzzy for a few moments while booting, but quickly becomes readable.
I still don't understand why the first few lines of "booting kernel" stuff don't look right, but I'm happy now.

No, really it's not a problem, I didn't mean to sound sarcastic. In fact, most people do need to be told to add it, so you were perfectly correct to mention it to me. And thanks again for all your help! _________________ There are 11 kinds of people in the world:
