I'm trying to install gentoo on an athlon xp 1700, and am starting at stage 1. The machine seems to randomly segfault while compiling. Starting from either stage 2 or 3 of course makes no difference. The values in make.conf I've tried multiple ways, including the default. Compiling for an i386 doesn't seem to help either. The machine is not overclocked, and I've also had slackware on it til recently, and that worked fine and things were able to compile.
heh, please help! |

Sounds like it might be an overheating problem. Is the machine overclocked? If so, then set to normal. Check the cpu fan/heatsink, it may be dirty. Bad memory or incorrect bios settings.

apparently the FSB was upped from 100mhz, to 133mhz, and the memory seemed to be having some issues keeping up.. i found this out, put the fsb back down to 100mhz and it is now almost done compiling everything... woot! |

I'm glad you found it. Linux does not like overclocking much from what I've seen in the posts. The problems seem to show up more when compiling as the cpu is running maxed out, sometimes for long strectches.
