Hi all. I've followed the card setup and the hardware setup and finally the user setup. My card (WinTV GO) is recognized & my channel setup is filled properly from Zap2It (as far as I can tell, anyway). I haven't touched any of the default connection settings (IP 127.0.0.1, server port 6543, status port 6544, master IP 127.0.0.1, master port 6543), and mythbackend is running , but when I run mythfrontend I get the following:

Code:

and when I try to Watch TV, I get the error:

Code:

Can anyone please point me in the right direction to get this working? I'd love to be able to record the Battlestar premiere tonight :) thks

I know you've said that mythbackend is running, but are you certain of that? Try running ps -A | grep myth and make sure that mythbackend is actually running. Sometimes it will claim to start when started via "/etc/init.d/mythbackend start", but die immediately.

It looks like (from your message above) that the backend isn't really running.

If it's not running, run mythbackend at a terminal and watch the output.

Actually I was*just* checking on that when you posted . And you're right. I discovered the /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log:

Code:
Starting up as the master server.
/home/user/NOBACKUP/mythtv/nfslockfile.lock: Permission denied
Unable to open lockfile!
Be sure that '/home/user/NOBACKUP/mythtv' exists and that both
the directory and that file are writeable by this user.

Which meant that the directory wasn't writable by the mythtv user. I changed the settings to point to a dir that is owned by mythtv, and I'm on now (sort of). So thanks for the post.

My problems now are no sound:
Code:
2006-10-07 13:18:23.444 Error opening audio device (), the error was: No such file or directory

and *really* bad video:
Code:
2006-10-07 13:18:23.526 VideoOutputXv: XvMCTex: Init failed
2006-10-07 13:18:23.527 VideoOutputXv Error: Could not find suitable XVideo surface.
2006-10-07 13:18:23.527 VideoOutputXv: Falling back to X shared memory video output.
                              *** May be slow ***
2006-10-07 13:18:24.064 TV: Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV
2006-10-07 13:18:24.077 Realtime priority would require SUID as root.
2006-10-07 13:18:24.079 Video timing method: USleep with busy wait
2006-10-07 13:18:29.062 VideoOutputXv Error:
***
* Your system is not capable of displaying the
* full framerate at 800x600 resolution.  Frames
* will be skipped in order to keep the audio and
* video in sync.

So I'll have to keep on poking around. I hope I can fix it before the baby wakes up from his nap :). thks

No help on the video, I'm afraid, unless you post more about your system (video card used, driver in use). In any case, your error suggests that XvMC (used on, at least, higher end Nvidia video cards) isn't being initialized, and neither is Xv, so it's using X shared memory.

That said, I'm using X shared memory on at least one Pentium3 class machine, and it is fast enough to handle full-frame vidoe at 800x600. Try turning off XvMC and Xv inside Mythtv

On the audio subject, it looks like it's not finding /dev/dsp, which is needed for outputting audio. That can also be solved inside MythTV, under Setup|General|Audio (3rd screen in). While you're there set your mixer device settings also.

My pc is a dell p4 with an on-board Intel i810 video card (& driver for same). I've been researching & checking & noticed my driver was a bit out of date (xf86-video-i810), so I tried to update it and I borked my X system (it couldn't load a module, can't remember which one), so I'm doing a full world update right now, hoping to correct that. When/if :) I get back in, I'll try your suggestion.

There is no /dev/dsp*. I'm using alsa, which seems to work for everything else, but if I'm correct myth is checking for OSS (?). So I installed he alsa-oss driver, but that didn't seem to have any effect.

Thanks for the help

You're right- /dev/sound/dsp is the OSS compatable access, which is required by myth. If you have your alsa drivers compiled into the kernel, you can add OSS API access through alsa in the kernel. It should be listed under something like: Device Drivers -> Sound -> Advanced Linux Sound Architechture -> OSS PCM (digital audio) API
