Hello.

I have a ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M card.

I downloaded and compiled DRM from the official website and copied the appropriate (radeon.ko) module in my kernel sources. lsmod shows that I have loaded and drm, radeon, ati_agp, agpgart.

Now, I want Xorg to use the kernel driver (radeon.ko) when it loads. I looked in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/ and found some drivers there from previous failed attempts to get direct 3d rendering work. Stuff like fglrx, radeon from portage, etc. I then deleted all drivers from /usr.../modules/dri and /drivers and put my new radeon.ko driver there. Well, now xorg wont start, reporting it can't find a 'radeon.so' driver.

My questions:
1) Why does Xorg try to load any drivers in the first place? I already have them loaded...
2) What the heck is .so?
3) How do I make Xorg use the already loaded drivers or the drivers in /usr/src/linux/drivers/char/drm?

The reason I went about doing this is cause glxinfo gave me and error about XFree86-DRI ... it can't be loaded or something.

If you know anything about this, please help, I can't get Xorg to run and I'm stuck with windows.

Errata: xorg.conf
...
Driver "radeon"
...

The kernel modules and the xorg modules are two completely separate things. One doesn't replace the other.

You will probably have to re-emerge xorg and/or parts of it to get that module back.

It is beyond me why XFree86-DRI is "missing" since it got loaded according to xorg log.

Thank you but these guides are rather useless. Tried all of them, and the HOWTO ATI Open Source. ATI drivers break X, can't get direct rendering with radeon driver.
