i've got an ati aiw 128 pro video card. i've got dri working by using a more recent dri source than what XF86 has (and is in the portage). i would like to get gatos (tv tuner) working, but to build gatos i need a source tree for xfree86. there doesn't seem to be a current working ati-gatos ebuild, not quite sure what the issues is there.

can i emerge xfree86, and have it leave the sources around so i can build the gatos drivers on my own? do other folks have this card? do you have the tv tuner working? how?

thanks much!

Hello!

I have a Debian/Xfree86 4.1.Gatos installation. Works like a charm.
I think you can compile gatos by using the ready-installed headers of you X system. If not, you can easily take the sources out of the portage tree, unpack them by hand to an arbitrary dir and compile gatos against that.

Did you try downloading a binary gatos distro?

Take care!

BINARIES...arggg... no, i haven't tried the binaries yet, but i'll do so soon. i was really hoping for a way to leave the sources laying out somewhere, as the km driver is next. i guess the linux sources do live in /usr/source/linux, so the km driver should build ok....

Gatos are X11 extensions and do not need KMDs... What are you going to compile? I hope not V4L... V4L does not support ATI cards...

Binaries should do fine!
If you really want to compile them, rather than use binaries, why dont't you untar the sources from
Code:
/usr/portage/distfiles/
to some arbitrary directory and compile gatos against them. Then remove that arbitrary dir and use binaries as you please.

you are correct in that the ati.2 driver is built from X11 sources. i tried the binary driver from gatos and it seems to work, it's for 4.2.0, and i've got 4.2.1. that made me a little leary, and wanted to build from souces.

the gatos ati.2 driver needs direct rendering from the kernel. the drm/dri whatever it's called in the stock gentoo 2.4.19 sources doesn't seem to have the correct module version for the ati 128 card.

the km kernel module allows video capture capabilities from ATI cards. [url]http://gatos.sourceforge.net/km.php see here[/url]. this module needs the videodev (video4linux) kernel module to work, or even load.

AH!

So I am a bit old.
Obviously the video recording is working now.
But unpacking X11 sources to some directory should enable you to compile the ATI driver, right?

Damn! this ATI tuner of mine is an ISA card, connected to ATI mach 64. There is just no way I could squeeze this baby into my athlon box...... I have to buy a PCI card....

stock gentoo 2.4.19....
Should be the same as you regular 2.4.19 kernel.
If you are useing XFS, do make sure that you have the proper patches for the kernel... Maybe the DRM/DRI drivers have a patch for the kernel, that you can use on the stock gentoo?

I have installed 4.2.1 and ATI.2-4.2.0-15 on my laptop for XVideo support on its Mach64 and it works fine. Back-up your 4.2.1 drivers and try it before compiling anything.

I have a ATI Rage 128 Pro 32M AGP
Was wondering
1)if the ati_xv stuff needs to be compiled to get a working app for the tuner or do others serve just as well.
2)Any body tried with the new ati compiled binaries.
3) If any success with kn. Which kernel?
4) If it's possible to make an ebuild to install
all the stuff necessarry for the AIW cards to just work "out of the box"

It'd be nice to have gentoo as prolly the only distro to support the tuner functions for Radeon and Rage 128 AIW

There are ebuilds for ffmpeg, ati-drivers and ati-gatos already. the ati-gatos one is currently masked though.

The only thing I see left is kn and AVview looks like the current app name for ati_xv.

I believe dri should work for any installed kernel w/o modification not sure.

I was wondering if anyone with an ATI AIW card has gotten the TV card working under XFree86 4.3? I tried to compile the Gatos CVS driver but when i issue "make" for the ati.2 module I get the following error

I'm running xawtv from a Radeon AIW under xfree4.3.

I just dl'ed the experimental 9 drivers (ATI-4.3.0-9.i386.tar.gz) from here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=12629

And followed the install instructions on gatos.sf.net.

Peace
