I am incredibly frustrated (more so, since it takes me 3 hours to get this far each time, and I'm only giving it one more try before I give up on gentoo).
I have an AMD 3400+ so to start with, I tried the 64bit LiveCD, which failed, so I gave the 383 version a go, which failed at exactly the same point, on the same package, with the same error.

I'm hoping for some kind of tip here as to what is going on, I'm trying a stage3 install from the LiveCD.

OK, so I just did a stage 3 install with the command line installer, which took more like 10 minutes.
Was the graphical installer forcing me into a stage 1 or 2 install? |

Looking at the output it seems trying to emerge hal. Now I'm not sure what's the exact problem it ran into, probably due to /usr/src/linux symlink not there or not pointing to the right location (my is something like /usr/src/linux -> linux-2.6.16...
But by default Gentoo will not emerge hal for you. Either you have put in a USE flag that directly or indirectly pulls in hal.
Maybe you can try with minimal install (i.e. no desktop like gnome or kde), after successful, then you can proceed to emerge the desktop.
Taking one small step at a time will make the learning process easier (yeah installing Gentoo is a fun learning process, welcome!)
Try no to put in extra USE flags, use as little as possible as first try. |

| Halis calling for your kernel while installing and it cant find it. I strongly recommend using the minimal install cd. It will tech you exactly what is goign on and it works always compared to the livecd's. |

I'm getting the same message. I'm doing a manual stage 3 install (no gui) off of a live CD, and when I get to the bit to emerge syslog-ng and vixie-cron, I get this same message. I'm not not using the stage zip or portage snapshot off of the cd, I'm pulling the freshest ones.
I have removed all use flags, and still get the same message. Perhaps something is wrong with the latest live CD? |

you need kernel sources in /usr/src/linux and a kernel configuration file in that same directory.
