Hi,

Has anyone else experienced this and/or know a solution (besides go back to 2.6.17)?

My Laptop is an Acer Aspire 1410 WLCi. I have 1G RAM, and plenty of free file space. System ran perfectly fine under 2.6.16 and 2.6.17, however compiling 2.6.18 seems to have introduced some undersirable sluggishness.

When I run glxgears under 2.6.17 I get about 700FPS, and under 2.6.18 I get about 500. Start-up sound (via ALSA) is also stuttering now and was not before.

Here's my 2.6.18 config (I used my old 2.6.17 config and did a make oldconfig to update):

I also ran module-rebuild rebuild after the new kernel was built and installed, and verified all appropriate modules were rebuilt.

Didn't resolve, so then I thought it may be X related, and rebuilt everything under category X11. No go. Direct rendering is working (just slower) and sound works (but is choppy).

Rebooting under 2.6.17 goes back to a normal state.

It almost seems like a CPU scheduling, or PREEMPT issue, but I'm no expert on that subject.

Any ideas based on my kernel config options above?

Here's my boot line from lilo for the kernel:

Code:
idebus=66 mce video=vesafb:1024x768-24@85,mtrr:3,ypan fbcon=scrollback:128k quiet CONSOLE=/dev/tty1 splash=silent,fadein,tty:11,theme:lila

I don't think that's a problem.

My hard drive is:

Code:

Device Model:     ST94019A
Serial Number:    3KW5GKPV
Firmware Version: 3.05
User Capacity:    40,007,761,920 bytes
Device is:        Not in smartctl database [for details use: -P showall]
ATA Version is:   6
ATA Standard is:  ATA/ATAPI-6 T13 1410D revision 2
Local Time is:    Tue Oct 10 10:51:43 2006 NDT
SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability.
SMART support is: Enabled

and hdparm....

Code:

/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  3 (32-bit w/sync)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 16383/255/63, sectors = 78140160, start = 0

Any help would be appreciated.

IIRC
Code:
CONFIG_DEBUG_BUGVERBOSE=y
can cause notable slowdown - did you have this enabled on 2.6.17?

Yes, and 2.6.16 as well. I can turn off I guess.. though, not sure this is related (unless 2.6.18 introduced a LOT of extra debugging).

I'll keep this in mind.

If there are other suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks.

EDIT: I don't think this is actually used though as CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL is not set. Can anyone confirm?

EDIT2: I went through the kernel options, and CONFIG_DEBUG_BUGVERBOSE=y is defaulted when CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL is not set, so that if you choose to enable this default will show up. So, it does not appear to be on. So that's not the issue.
