I haven't used my Sony DVD-RW in a while and I went to use it yesterday and it couldn't detect the cd in any program I tried. It's detecting the drive but not the cds. I tried several cds and even a dvd so they're not the problem. My /etc/fstab hasn't changed in ages so I know that should be fine. Any suggestions anyone?
Thanks! |

What do you mean with not being detected? You can't mount them? _________________ Antonino Catinello | http://catinello.eu |

I get the message that there's no cd in the drive or that the drive is empty. |

But you can actually mount them manually?
I suspect hardware failure if you can't do it. _________________ Antonino Catinello | http://catinello.eu |

I put a data disc in the drive and did mount /mnt/cdrom and I got no error message. So I navigated to /mnt/cdrom and did a ls and it showed the files on the dvd. The drive itself is a good quality sony that is less than a year old. I haven't used it much at all. I can't see this as being a hardware failure especially since I can mount a data disc and see the files on it. |

Me neither. Do you use dvd/dvdr/dvdread in your use flags? _________________ Antonino Catinello | http://catinello.eu |

No I don't but this player has worked since I installed it so I don't see how that would make a difference. |

I was having the same issue with the kernel 2.6.17-gentoo-r8, but it works fine with 2.6.16-gentoo-r9 .
I guess I will try with 2.6.18 when it's marked as stable...
Anyone else have this problem? |

I'm using 2.6.14 vanilla. Guess I'll upgrade and see what happens. |

Actually, I'm getting the same thing again with 2.6.16...
Maybe my DVD drive is dying. If I play something after booting, it seems to work ok, but then later on the drive seems to become unable to read discs... wierd...
My drive is a Plextor PX-750A DVD writer... bought it less than a year ago. |
