I've installed net-ftp/ftpd-0.17, and I edited /etc/xinetd.d/ftp to set "disbale" to no. I have ssl enabled, and I did that weird thing for creating a certificate.
If I try to ftp to localhost, everything seems to be normal, except that after entering my password, it tells me:
530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.
(I tried both as myself and root.) |

This is bug 12353. The netkit-ftpd package is broken with shadow passwords. |

Try proftpd? Works great and is really easy to configure.
