HI!
I'm spending some time at my friend's house and i wan't to connect my gentoo to the net but even if change my mac to be exactly the same as his it's not working. I've installed macchanger and set the /etc/conf.d/net properly, accordlingly to the example file.
Code:

eth0_mac="XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX"

I've also tried
Code:

ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 hw ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
ifconfig eth0 up
and then runnung dhcp but i still get connection timeout error

Does he need to specify a hostname to the dhcp server?

I've also heard of ISP's that limit the number of requests a dhcp server is allowed to handle from each account...

O don't know what you mean by the limit, let's just say that network is working fine under windows(after changin mac address), i don't know if it requires specified domain name, how can i check this ,and if is needed, set it??

I'm guessing your friend would know if he needs to supply a hostname to connect. (under windows it's the name of the computer)
But if it's working on windows on the same machine I guess that's not it, and then it's also unlikely the ISP limits dhcp requests.

Just try to think of differences between the windows and linux situation (as far as network config goes anyway ;))

dns servers are set in /etc/resolv.conf
Each nameserver line is a dns server

wins servers are used to resolve windows netbios names

Both dns and wins servers are not relevant for dhcp clients which don't use hostnames.

Can you get a connection by using a static IP ?

ok, that's funny, if i set network connection in windows to static using ip and subnet from dhcp the network works fine, it's not being blocked mu different mac address, how should my /etc/conf.d/net files look if my ip is 111.111.111.111 subnet: 255.255.255.0 default gatewway 111.111.111.1 and DNS is same as default gateway, i know it doesn't matter but WINS is 111.111.23.23??? i know this post looks a bit strange:D

Code:
config_eth0=( "111.111.111.111 netmask 255.255.255.0" )
route_eth0=( "default via 111.111.111.1" )
dns_servers_eth0=( "111.111.111.1" )

Something like that, see /etc/conf.d/net.example

niedzwiedz,

If the ISP allocates you a single IP using DHCP you must not attempt to use a static IP on the internet.
Hopefully it just won't work but you are likely to choose an IP thats in use somewhere else. If your ISP spots that you account will be suspended.

The problem with swapping computers, or dual booting even is that DHCP assigned setups have a defined lifetime (the lease). When you shutdown and restart within the period of the lease, you are expected to reuse the old details without renegiotiating with the DHCP server.

To do a clean swap, you need to surrender the DHCP lease at shutdown. Linux can do that - read
Code:
man dhcpcd
but I have no idea how to make Windows surrender its DHCP lease.
This ensures that the server knows you don't have a valid setup and is prepared to negiotiate with you.
Lease times are set in the server and can usefully vary from about 10 minutes to weeks.

ok i solved it:D
it was all about having
Code:
route_eth0=( "default via 111.111.111.1" )

i changed it to
routes_eth0=( "default via 111.111.111.1" ) and now it's working
