Hey all,

Well im kinda new to this gentoo stuff
but reading the forums i found out, it could be worse

the thing is, i installed tarbal 3, compiled a kernel w/ some options on,
even got it booting, emerging X-server and Kde as im typing this from lynx.

Now here is where the problem start, since i got lots of time left
(compiling aint fast ^^) I read the forum and learn more each post
but the things that mather to me, dont get covered a lot.

for 1: tv tuner, i read somethings about them, but how does a noob like me get it working.
tried it under red hat, mandrake even debian... each time i get xawtv to
scan for frequenties and start up then my HD led turns red and my system crashes.

I continued to read and found out i need to add more options to my kernel, the v4l for one. also I seen message about config_video_dev
but i cant find that option... I already send some private messages to ppl who helped me w/ tips but I could use some more help.

Another thing is, I did compile the USB HID (i think its named) into the
kernel but my mouse isnt working / system doesnt recognize the plug in. cant seem to find a command to start a daemon for it or something.

As You can see I got a long way to go (even longer cuz kde still busy) but any help you guys can give me would be appreciated.

with regards,

TidalWave

can't help you with the tv tuner, cuz i never used that and don't know how to set up...

as for the usb stuff: why do you compile this thing into the kernel? i compiled all of the usb stuff as a module and then i just insert the stuff i need in /etc/modules.autoload. and i run hotplug (emerge sys-apps/hotplug && rc-update add hotplug default) to manage most of my usb stuff...

cheers

PT_LAmb thnx, very handy link.... Im reading it completely then im gonna use it. should work but my card uses BT878 instead of BT848. well trial n error is best teacher.

as for the Hotplug thingy, Im reading it now, but do I need to add anything to the kernel for it. cant find it in documentation anywhere.. its just a program that registers the hotplugable things like mouse, but does it adds the functionality too??

here's what I did to enable usb mice on my install...
I changed up the /etc/modules.autoload file to this
Code:
ide-scsi
sg
sr_mod
input
mousedev
usbmouse
usb-uhci
8139too
cs46xx
NVdriver

or try
Code:
ide-scsi
sg
sr_mod
input
mousedev
hid
8139too
NVdriver

I Don't know the differences between the two cards. But most certainly, if there's any revelant one, the documentation will tell you that.

Check out /usr/src/linux/Documentation/video4linux/bttv/

I have no USB experience. :(

I hope you find all the help you need, either by searching, or asking.

Good luck,

Ooh things looking up for me.

I thought what the heck lets just try that hotplug thingy,
emerged it, it installed pretty fast,
rebooted my pc and plugged in my mouse
it lighted up like a fresh xmas-tree

used cat /dev/input/mouse0 or /mice
and moved it, and bang i had a nice line of blaah

So next step was configurating it in X, went pretty fast.
started xserver (just X with very ugly Window manager)
and mouse worked... so really great stuff that hotplug

As for the Bttv, im working on that now...
This will be the hardest and challenging part but with my
new refound will to get things working... I will succeed!!!

thnx all for the help.. *shouts* Bttv here i come! Your going down

Regards,

Tidalwave

Here's some great apps:
  • XawTV (tv viewer);
  • lirc (remote control interface);
  • cabletv (CableCrypt decoder);
Enjoy,
Ricardo Cordeiro :)
